Can one solve violence with violence?

Whilst sometimes using violence is necessary for self-protection it is never a very effective way to teach others not to be violent. Teaching non-violence needs to be done primarily by example. Can you really teach your child effectively not to smoke, drink and swear whilst doing so yourself?
