I was very excited to try this head guard out. I purchased this one as well as another brand from a different store.
My martial arts background is primarily stand up fighting with an emphasis on 'head hunting', so good head and face protection is paramount for my training.
Pros: The Morgan HG2 is well padded and fits snug around the head and doesn't get knocked off easily during striking.
The grill is strong, stable and protects the face well.
Service was excellent. My package arrived shortly after ordering and I was kept in communication about status of my order.
Cons: Unfortunately the cheek padding comes too close into the center of the face pinching the nose. This impairs breathing through the nose making you breath through your mouth...a big no no in combat.
I should mention that I ordered the large size, and I do not have a large or wide nose. Likewise when my sparring partner tried it, he had the exact same problem.
Another major issue is the grill and cheek padding prevent the eyes from seeing your opponent from chest down. This meant I could not see kicks coming at me. Not good when your sparring partner is a TKD practitioner.
Although the HG2 is of good quality make I cannot recommend it. I'm surprised that the design flaws were not picked up on before this item hit the production line.
Other brands I have used do not obstruct vision to this extent or pinch the nose.
The slightly more expensive HG1 looks like it has a little more breathing room than its counterpart. That might be a better option. We'll have to wait till someone reviews it.

Try readjusting and tilting the head guard forward a bit so padding is not sitting on nose and you will be able to see lower.
If you loosen the bottom side velcro straps on the grill you can open the padding more so it does not press on your nose.
For more vision but less protection you can take the grill off.
For TKD or kick boxing sparring I recommend the HG-5 Head Guard Muay Thai Pro.
With all head guards you need to keep your chin down and nose pointed at opponent as your vision is more limited when your head goes out of the recommended fighting position.
Hope that helps! |
