Fitness training equipment is one of the simplest and most effective ways to build strength and endurance without using complicated exercise machines.

Intelligently designed fitness training equipment can be used to harness the natural forces of physics. Oftentimes it is wiser to use resources that are more readily available including physical exertion and the surrounding environment. According to experts well-designed fitness training devices can use gravity, body weight, external weight, or tension as a resistance force to facilitate fitness training (*1). If you are just starting out it makes more sense to purchase exercise devices rather than a gymnasium full of expensive machines. Similarly no professional training facility could be considered complete without these basic tools. A professional trainer can give you one on one advice about how to use them correctly but it is also possible to do it on your own. Some of the most important pieces of basic training equipment that are available at the Universal Self Defence web store are exercise devices, gym gloves, medicine balls, fitness ropes, skipping ropes and weight training articles.

Exercise Devices
Anything that is not an exercise machine can be considered to be an exercise device. Exercise machines are large contraptions designed to provide some type of work out. Examples of exercise machines are elliptical trainers, rowing machines, stair-steppers, stationary bicycles and treadmills. Sometimes it is more convenient to replicate the same workout in the field with some help from exercise devices. This could be anything from a leg stretcher pro deluxe to a fitness ladder to step hurdles and a power resistance belt. Lateral power leg resisters are just as effective as machines.

Gym Gloves
There is somewhat of a controversy over the necessities of wearing gym gloves when you train. Some people argue that they get in the way but others are quick to point out their benefits. Many trainers say that weight lifting gloves are fantastic because they improve grip, protection and confidence. Workout gloves that do not have fingertips improve the airflow and breathability of the hands during a workout. Many colours are available including camouflage, red, blue and pink. Cotton inner gloves are an alternative to wrapping your hands in bandages before putting on a pair of boxing gloves and are easier to wash and keep hygienically clean.

Medicine Balls
Medicine balls are also known as fitness balls, med balls and exercise balls. A medicine ball is a heavily weighted ball that can be held directly in front of the shoulders. Remember that the further the ball is from your body, the more core strength it takes to support it. They serve an important function for weight training. This can be accomplished in a slow manner that is ideal for rehabilitation and sports medicine. This very popular fitness tool comes in many varieties and styles. Some medicine balls have handles, for example. The traditional medicine balls are a strong construction made with a leather cover and are still a very popular fitness tool. Now we also have rubber medicine balls that bounce like a basketball and soft wall balls that give a few added dimensions to medicine ball training workouts.

Fitness Ropes
There have been a large variety of challenging exercises devised with fitness rope training, which has become very popular with CrossFit training. Fitness ropes are always extra thick so you can maintain a good hand grip and come in a number of lengths to accommodate many different functional fitness exercises. When training with fitness ropes it is very important to wear gym gloves so you do not get rope burn. If you are climbing the rope it is important to consult a personal trainer so you have the correct technique and do not venture beyond your limits.

Skipping Ropes
Skipping ropes are not just for little girls they are also used as fitness training equipment for top gymnasts and elite athletes. Skipping ropes are also great for personal fitness training as they are inexpensive, portable and they offer a great cardiovascular workout. Expert fitness trainers compare 15-20 minutes of skipping rope to running an eight-minute mile (*2). When skipping rope be sure to wear comfortable clothing and proper shoes like athletic trainers. Make sure that you have enough room to swing the skipping rope especially if in a public space. Keep in mind that the surface you are jumping on will literally have an impact on your feet, legs and knees. This is not necessarily a bad thing as the right amount of repeated impact conditions muscles and strengthens bone and joints. On the overhand too much jarring and impact can cause shin splints so it is very important to get the balance right by avoiding hard surfaces and wearing good shoes.

Weight Training
A lot of equipment goes into furnishing a weight training facility. Not only do you need all of the machinery and weights, but also a certain level of protection against all of that in the form of gym mats, padding and gear. Not to mention important methods of storage and organisation such as benches, seats and weight stands. Consider all of the various weightlifting sets one may need for the different muscle groups of the body. Some types of weight training equipment are ankle, wrist and hand weights, dumbbells, weight training bags, sledgehammers and weight sleds. Also various types of weighted training bags with handles can provide an even wider variety of endurance and strength exercises with the added benefit of being much safer and the softer weighted bags feel more comfortable than swinging a traditional hard steel weight around.
