Always let someone know where you will be, how you will be travelling and when you expect to return.
Always carry some form of identification, money for a transport out of trouble, a mobile phone and a phone card or coins for a public phone. Also consider getting a call home free service number.
A code can be used if you just wish to advise of your safe arrival, eg. Letting the phone ring twice then hang up.
If you are caught short of money in an emergency, ring any telephone operator service and explain. If the emergency is life threatening then dial "000" anywhere in Australia. Check the emergency numbers before you travel overseas.
You can also dial “112” on any GSM network mobile phone, anywhere in the world and you will be instantly transferred to that area’s emergency number.
